MIES VAN DER ROHE AWARD POSTPONED TO 2022
Prestigious architectural award postponed due to covid-19 virus
1. 1. 2021

The Mies van der Rohe Foundation and Creative Europe have announced that the European Union's Mies van der Rohe International Prize for Contemporary Architecture will be postponed to 2022 due to the covid-19 situation. The winner selection process will be carried out in two phases, which will include works, created between October 2018 and April 2021.

Projects for the prestigious award are selected by architectural chambers or professional organizations across Europe, as well as the executive board of the Mies van der Rohe Foundation and independent experts, who visit all the works in the final selection. According to Anne Ramos, the director of the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, this will not be possible in the first months of 2021.

The procedure for the next edition of the award will be carried out in two stages.

In the first phase will be compiled a list of nominated projects, completed between October 2018 and October 2020. Candidates from whom the winners for 2021 would be initially selected have already been sent by experts and professional organizations.

In the second phase will be published a list of nominated projects, completed between November 2020 and April 2021.

Selection process and award ceremony:

January 2021: announcement of the works nominated in the first phase of the EU Mies Award

September 2021: announcement of the works nominated in the second phase of the EU Mies Award.

January 2022: announcement of the Shortlisted works

February 2022: announcement of the 5 finalist works

April 2022: announcement of the Winners

May 2022: EU Mies Award Day with conferences, debates and the Awards ceremony in the Barcelona Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, opening of the travelling exhibition, presentation of the publication and open days to the selected works around Europe

Since 1988, more than 3,600 projects have been nominated for the EU Mies van de Rohe Prizes for Contemporary Architecture. The projects represent the most comprehensive archive of contemporary architecture in Europe, featuring carefully selected works discussed by leading architects, critics, journalists and curators from around the world. The award, presented at the Mies van der Rohe pavilion in Barcelona, is named after the German architect.
