On Monday, 13 June, at 12 am, we invite you to the garden of Plečnik's house, Karunova ulica 4 and 6, to the presentation of the book Andrej Hrausky: Plečnik's architecture in Ljubljana. The first edition of the book, which was published in the jubilee year of Plečnik in 2017, has been already sold out. The second supplemented edition includes quite a few novelties. The book will be presented by the author Andrej Hrausky. The publishers Maja Ivanič, director of the DESSA gallery, and Blaž Peršin, director of the Museum and Galleries of the City of Ljubljana, will also take part in the presentation.
The second, supplemented edition of the book was published under the honorary patronage of the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO.
In 2022, we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of Plečnik's birth (January 23, 1872). At the same time, we are celebrating the inscription of Plečnik's Ljubljana on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The events are an opportunity to once again present the work of our greatest architect to the wider Slovenian and foreign public. It is right that such anniversaries are accompanied by appropriate professional journalism.
The DESSA Gallery has a long tradition with literature on Plečnik's works. Already in 1993, we prepared a reprint of two of Plečnik's books: Architectura perennis and Efforts (Napori) with an accompanying study by dr. Damjan Prelovšek. In the following years, we published three more guides to its architecture, prepared by Andrej Hrausky, Janez Koželj and dr. Damjan Prelovšek: Plečnik's Ljubljana (1996), Plečnik's Slovenia (1997) and Plečnik Abroad (1998). These three books were the first comprehensive review of all of Plečnik's constructed/built up works.
After more than twenty years, the need for a guide to Plečnik's works in Ljubljana re-emerged. Above mentioned books have long since sold out. On the basis of studies and newly discovered material, a new approach to understanding Plečnik's work was formed. Therefore, in 2017, the DESSA Gallery together with the Museums and Galleries of the City of Ljubljana (MGML) prepared the guide Plečnik's Architecture in Ljubljana. The book was also published in English. Its author architect Andrej Hrausky, as an external expert, also participated in the preparation of a dossier for the inscription of Plečnik's works in Ljubljana on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The interest in this book was huge from architects as well as educational institutions and the general public, and at the end of 2021 it was sold out again. Therefore, we have prepared a reprint of it with an appendix in which the author emphasized the importance of Plečnik's anniversary and highlighted those works that were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in June 2021.
