You are kindly invited to the 41st Piran Days of Architecture, which will take place on Saturday, November 23, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Portorož Auditorium. At 7:00 p.m. we will present the Piranesi 2024 award, and at 8:00 p.m. the Piranesi 2024 exhibition will traditionally be opened at the Monfort Exhibition Hall. The title of this year's PIDA theme is Ethics and Responsibility.
The program starts already on Friday, November 22: at 3 p.m. there will be ZAPS (The Chamber of Architecture and Spatial Planning of Slovenia) lectures in the Auditorium, and in the evening the exhibitions that are part of PIDA program will be opened.
Ethics and Responsibility
A constant presence in our lives, crises serve as a reminder that there are limits to our living environment. Changes in space, both as natural processes and as human interventions, carry long-term consequences impacting the quality of people's lives. The ideology of neoliberalism, founded on individualism and selfishness while promoting competition and greed, is the mark of our time. As much is also reflected in space, seen by many as an opportunity for extraordinary financial gain first and foremost. The architects of Modernism strove for a different, more just world that would ensure decent living conditions for everyone, not just for the privileged elite. As a result, their architecture was a synonym for optimism, solidarity, and universal progress, while contemporary architecture is shaping to be a material expression of the increasing inequality. The drastic loss of respect suffered by the architectural profession in recent decades is therefore understandable. Art and architecture are more important today than they have ever been before. But only when they adopt an ethical stance to challenge the mentality which puts profit before people.
