We kindly invite you to the opening of the Plecnik Award 2023 exhibition, which will be held on Wednesday, May 24, at 7 p. m. in DESSA gallery. The recipients of the 2023 Plecnik Award will present their awarded project.
In the DESSA gallery, we are traditionally preparing an exhibition of Plečnik's awards. Since the organizers have prepared an exhibition of all awarded projects this year in Plečnik House, the main Plečnik Award 2023 will be presented in more detail in the DESSA gallery: the open library of the Vič elementary school in Ljubljana by the ARP architectural studio. The jury of the Plečnik Awards wrote this among other things about this year's selection and the awarded project: "Architecture is an art that directly determines our common and private space and thus marks the environment and our everyday life." Three key themes stand out in this year's selection of fifty submitted works: renovation of the existing building stock, community participation in architecture and responding to contemporary social and climate change. "The three topics highlighted this year represent a model of environmental development that is sustainable, thoughtful, community-oriented and focused on the ethical use of materials and energy. By recognizing the best examples of architecture, let's encourage decision-makers and creators in fulfilling these goals and contribute to the better development of Slovenia. We are all responsible for making our landscapes, cities and communities vibrant, fair and sustainable. Architecture plays an important role in achieving these goals.
The open library of the Vič Primary School unexpectedly establishes a new meeting point for knowledge and encounters in the unused school hall, thereby freeing up the original library space for the creation of a new, urgently needed classroom. With its aesthetic and ethical dimension, the library at the heart of the school promotes a reading culture and educates about the importance of high-quality spaces for understanding the values of architecture. In this way, it significantly outgrows its physical scale and proves that smaller architectural tasks can go beyond mere technical-functional issues and successfully address the social, emotional and cultural aspects of society."
